THE DESK
Zoe had to bite the inside of her cheek when she walked into the office Monday morning. She hadnât seen Gwen in four days since sheâd had a quick flight for some work at the beginning of the week. Zoe slipped her bag into her bottom drawer and headed for the open door to Gwenâs interior office. She stopped short.
Gwen was leaning over her desk, deep in work, glasses perched on her nose and tendrils of hair falling across her face to obscure her gaze. Zoe wet her suddenly parched lips before silently turning on her toes and going back to her desk. She turned on her computer and got to work.
It was hours before Gwen stepped out of her office, crossing her arms as she leaned against the door frame, and staring directly at Zoe as if she had all the time in the world to stand there and wait. Zoe was at a complete loss for words as she raised her gaze to meet Gwenâs.
âI knew I was right about you,â Gwen stated, her voice firm with an edge to it that Zoe couldnât quite place.
Zoeâs stomach dropped. âRight about what, Ms. Fudala?â
Gwen stayed still one moment too long, her gaze roving all over Zoeâs body before flicking back up to her eyes. In silence, Gwen stood up straight and strode to the main door, shutting it before facing Zoe down with a stern look.
âIâm in need of a distraction.â
Zoeâs heart thumped wildly as Gwen stepped closer, the lines of her legs shifting the tight pencil skirt as she moved, and Zoe had to work too damn hard to lift her gaze back to those all-seeing blue eyes.
âThatâs it right there, isnât it?â Gwen sounded as though sheâd figured it out.
Whatever it was, Zoe had no idea. She was going to keep silent for as long as possible. She was going to let Gwen tell her exactly what was happening.
âDid you know I spent all weekend thinking about it?â
Gwen slid onto the edge of Zoeâs desk, crossing her legs so her skirt hiked up high, revealing small circular bruises on the inside of one of her thighs, bruises that were nearly gone. A thrill ran through Zoe at the thought that sheâd caused those. She dragged her gaze along them, trying to make out the one peeking from just under the royal blue fabric.
A throat clearing caught her attention.
Immediately, she looked to Gwenâs neck to see if there were bite marks there, but she didnât find any. Gwen bent down, the open line of her button up shirt revealing the edge of her beige bra as she moved.
âOh yes, theyâre still there,â Gwen accused quietly. âI had to spend quite a bit of time putting concealer on them every day since.â
Zoe drew in a sharp breath, her lips parting as if she was going to say something, but words still failed her. Tentatively, Zoe reached out and ran her fingers along Gwenâs smooth skin, across the bruises she had left.
